This book by Erica Fischer and Simone Ladwig-Winters profiles the photographer Eva Kemlein. As a Jewish woman, she survived the Nazi era in Berlin’s underground resistance. After the war, she used her camera to document Berlin’s political and cultural rebirth. Her photographs capture the city in transition like hardly any other work of that period.

Through her reportage and theatre photography, Eva Kemlein captured life in East and West Berlin. Her images remain important testimonies to German history to this day. Her extraordinary life tells a story of courage, resistance, loss and artistic strength. The Berlin Museum manages her estate and makes it accessible to researchers and the public.
