Literature LIVE

In 1920, the painter Baladine Klossowska reunites with the poet Rainer Maira Rilke. She, a divorced mother of two teenage sons—one of whom is the painter Balthus—falls passionately in love with him.

After a brief “amour fou,” Rilke increasingly distances himself from his lover. While she seeks unconditional closeness and togetherness and loses herself in her love for him, he needs space and quiet to be able to write. They exchange letters filled with longing, always searching for the right balance between closeness and distance. “Mouky,” Rilke affectionately calls his girlfriend in these letters. A letter to her would be the last one he wrote shortly before his death.

Julia Franck explores the life of Rilke’s last lover through literature.
