Metropol Berlin

More than a century of parties and entertainment

Theatre, club and Germany's hippest disco: behind the Art Nouveau façade on Nollendorfplatz, people have been partying for over 100 years. Events, concerts and parties still take place here today.

The Metropol's current programme is as diverse as Berlin itself: from chansons to house and heavy metal, the Metropol is open to all styles. Themed parties and events round off the programme. Contemporary light installations illuminate the time-honoured ambience and at the same time form a link between the galleries, columns and chandeliers of the old days and the club culture of the modern age.

The Metropol has been a theatre, cinema and Germany's hippest disco: the beautiful façade of the Art Nouveau building on Nollendorfplatz is a symbol of amusement and has many stories to tell. Stories that made history: The first UFA sound film premiered here in 1925, in 1930 the Nazis laid out stink bombs in the cinema as a protest against the first screening of the anti-war film "Im Westen nichts Neues" and in the 80s DJ Westbam fuelled Berlin's reputation as a techno club legend with 130 beats per minute.

The history of the Metropol Theatre

planned as a theatre in 1905, the Metropol made a name for itself as a venue and driving force for the club scene beyond Berlin's borders. The beautiful façade of the art nouveau building on Nollendorfplatz is a symbol of amusement and harbours many stories.

The wild 80s

After the Wall was built in West Berlin, the Metropol became the centre of club and disco culture. Berlin celebrates: spectacular laser shows and hip DJs attract international legends to the city: David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Human League, Nena and Nina Hagen from the GDR. The noise virtuosos of Einstürzende Neubauten characterise the sound of the 80s in Berlin , as does the German punk rock of the Ärzte. DJ Westbam accelerates the beats of the city in the Metropol, so that the techno sound of Berlin sends sound waves across the Atlantic and his Love Parade hits resound as anthems.

The rebirth as a club and event location

After reunification, the venerable building was removed from the heart of Berlin's club and stage world. The scene moved eastwards. And despite heavy investment, the new operators were unable to conjure up the glory of the old days and the legendary club had to close for good in 2014. Five years after its closure, the legendary venue on Nollendorfplatz heralded the start of the next big party season. The reopening in September 2019 with well-known DJs, burlesque and a concert by the Moka Efti Orchestra, known from the series Babylon Berlin, was sold out.
