The International Young Bakers Competition was first held in Berlin, Germany in 1971. Originally there were only a handful of participants, but today more and more countries are sending participants. Teams from all over the world are invited to participate in this annual competition, which is held alternately in the different member countries. The participating countries are usually members of the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners (UIBC).
Each country sends two candidates, who are usually the winners and runners-up of the respective national championships. In some countries, these championships are held immediately before the UIBC competition, while in others qualification is based on the previous year's competition.
