USA 1983, directed by Barbra Streisand
A fascinating musical that tells the story of a young Jewish woman (Barbra Streisand) in Eastern Europe in the late 19th century, who disguises herself as a man and calls herself Anshel so that she can attend the Talmud school. She falls in love with a fellow student called Avigdor.
Avigdor wants to marry a girl called Hadass, but when it becomes known that his brother has committed suicide, Hadass’s parents reject him as a prospective son-in-law. Avigdor urges Anshel to marry Hadass so that, at the very least, she will not end up marrying anyone else.
It is only after the wedding that Yentl—Anshel—reveals to him that she is a woman and that she loves him. She leaves Poland and emigrates to the USA. Hadass and Avigdor get married.
