From 6 November 2023, the exhibition showcase "Look into our collection" will be on display in the entrance area of the DDR Museum, in which selected porcelain from the GDR will be presented. This showcase serves as a warm welcome for visitors.
The exhibits on display illustrate the diverse uses of fine porcelain in the GDR. The material, known as "white gold", was produced for political honors of dignitaries, for celebratory occasions such as anniversaries, and for gastronomic and private use. In addition to the porcelain products from the Meissen Manufactory, which continued its craftsmanship in the GDR as the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen (VEB) and looked back on a tradition going back over 300 years, objects from the "big four" are also on display, namely the State Owned Companies in Kahla, Ilmenau, Weimar and Lichte.
The exhibition will, among other things, present a fully sculptural bust of Ernst Thälmann made of Meissen porcelain. The aesthetic contrast between simple elegance and cheerful diversity is also conveyed by the artfully decorated tea sets. Some of the tableware from the Palace of the Republic complements the rich selection of exhibits and creates a connection to the newly designed exhibition area, which deals with the theme of "Palace of the Republic".
A look into the showcase gives an impression of the extensive variety of objects that can be found in the world's largest collection on the subject of everyday life in the GDR.
The temporary exhibition is dedicated to new topics at regular intervals in order to give visitors an insight into the museum's rich holdings.
