Guitar Anniversary Concert for the 125th Birthday of Bruno Henze

This is to be a special concert in three respects. Firstly, it is to honor the 125th birthday of Bruno Henze (1900-1978), who founded the ensemble in 1955 and led it until his death.

His school work and his compositions have accompanied generations of guitarists all over the world. Secondly, the choir warmly welcomes the youth guitar ensemble "cantomano" from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Music High School. They would like to increase the great success of their first concert together in 2012 by playing the majority of the program together - with an ensemble of a total of 30 players.

Thirdly, they will play Bach's 3rd Brandenburg Concerto in Bruno Henze's arrangement for octave, third, first and fifth bass guitars. He only arranged it insofar as he transferred the original string parts to the differently tuned guitars.

All notes are played back in their original form by the guitars – there are only a few octaves, as the fifth bass guitar cannot produce tones as deep as the double bass.

Other highlights include four baroque dances – supported by two flutes – as well as Telemann's Concerto No. 2 in D major for four violins (played from the original string score) and a trio by Haydn.

In contrast, an arrangement of Anton Bruckner's motet "Ecce sacerdos magnus" will be performed, which he composed in 1884 for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Linz.

The 20th century is represented by a paraphrase of Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste" through the "Dance Suite" by Bruno Henze, which will conclude the program with the snappy Furiant.
