Guest performance as part of FIND 2025

Behind closed doors, a man appears in the hallway of a flat. He tells us about how his father deserted his family and joined the radical Islamist movement Hizb ut-Tahrir. Some other people join him.

The founder of an orphanage, which offers a refuge for mothers and children. A waitress who works in a bar and has lived alone since she was 15 years old. A nationalist whose dream is that everyone in this country should speak nothing but Kyrgyz.

A young feminist who was raised by her grandmother and does not know what to do with her life. Another woman who was kidnapped and forced into marriage. Ghostly and seamlessly, these and yet more life stories fade in and out of each other.

The uncanny feeling of having entered into the most intimate space that people have – their flat – never lets go of you. Nor does the »Nest« that gives this play its title. All the voices gathered here are connected by the fact that they come from Kyrgyzstan, a Central Asian republic that was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1876, and did not gain independence until the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Director Chagaldak Zamirbekov and the Ensemble have conducted interviews with numerous Kyrgyz people for »Уя (Nest)«. Every voice explores what the term home means. Or could mean. A rare portrait of a changing society, in which there are as many perspectives on the good life as there are flats in the country.

CHAGALDAK ZAMIRBEKOV studied at the Kyrgyzstan National Conservatory and the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, where he also teaches since 2021. He creates experimental documentary theater formats, adapts and stages classical texts and is also working in music and dance theater.
