The Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin is celebrating its fifth anniversary and once again invites you to discover the latest Ukrainian auteur cinema.
The leitmotif of the fifth festival edition is the theme of decolonization and for the first time a short film competition will take place.
Program highlights:
- Main program: presentation of documentaries and feature films from Ukraine.
- Special program: Retrospective of Ukrainian cinema and film series "Decolonial Focus"
- Short film programs: Three special programs as part of the short film competition.
- "UA Hits": the audience successes of Ukrainian cinemas.
- Workshops, Q&As, readings, parties and more
The motto of this year's festival is "Decolonization". The focus is on the significance of this process for Ukrainian culture and society and the need to free Ukrainian culture from the shadow of imperial influences. A retrospective of Ukrainian cinema and a film series focusing on Georgian and Armenian cinema will shed light on these topics.
"Decolonization is rarely associated with Ukraine internationally, but this movement is currently experiencing an upswing there. Socially, historically, artistically and personally, the independence of Ukrainian culture is being rediscovered, while the Soviet legacy is being confronted. Ukrainian cinema, like Georgian and Armenian cinema, has a long tradition. In the last ten years, a new generation of filmmakers has revived this tradition and established an independent auteur cinema. Similar developments can also be observed in Georgian and Armenian cinema. We would like to introduce our audience to these fascinating and significant processes of turning away from past and present empires," the festival organizers comment on the focus of the fifth festival edition.
Venues: The festival traditionally opens and closes its program at the Colosseum Kino in Prenzlauer Berg. Further screenings and events will take place at Zeiss-Großplanetarium Kino, ACUD Kino, Sputnik Kino, Il Kino, Silent Green (tbc) and Sinema transtopia (tbc).
