What happens when traditional Taiwanese instruments meet the European string quartet tradition? On 15 October 2026, the award-winning Taiwanese ensemble 3Peoplemusic and the Berlin-based Sonar Quartet, under the musical direction of Yuän Chang, will bring two musical worlds together in a contemporary dialogue at the Kühlhaus Berlin.

The programme features six world premieres by Chao-Ming Tung, Vincent Ho, Chihchun Chi-sun Lee, Chiung-Wen Hsu, Felix Tetz and Michael A. Leitner, as well as two joint improvisations.

The works are the result of an exchange with the musicians spanning several months, during which the composers engaged intensively with the playing techniques and sonic languages of the zheng, ruan and dizi/xiao.

Thus, the characteristic timbres of traditional East Asian instruments meet the soundscape of the string quartet – not merely as a juxtaposition, but as a starting point for new musical forms.
