The site of today’s Humboldt Forum in Berlin has a long and eventful history. Over the centuries, it has served as a residence of the Hohenzollern dynasty, a parade ground, the location of the Palace of the Republic, and an open public space. This overview tour of the site’s history invites participants to explore and discuss different interpretations of history and their impact on the present day. Through selected objects and key locations, visitors gain insights into the development of the site, from the era of electors, kings, and emperors to the history of the GDR, the debates surrounding the demolition of the Palace of the Republic, and the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace as the Humboldt Forum.
The tour highlights how the use and meaning of this site have changed over time and why it remains one of Berlin’s most important places of remembrance and public discussion.
