Event as part of the "Festival der Berliner Industriekultur"

The Hufeisensiedlung is the largest, most famous, and most challenging complex within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Berlin Modernist Settlements.” It was built to counter the unhealthy living conditions that had arisen in the tenement buildings of the Imperial era as a result of industrialization.

In 1998, the flagship of this movement, the housing association GEHAG, was among the properties privatized by the State of Berlin through a bidding process. Following several transfers on the stock exchange, this led to all row houses with gardens being converted to individual ownership over the past 25 years. Initiated by the residents, numerous model projects in the field of historic preservation and education were launched, and the guide played a key role in their implementation.

During a two-hour guided tour of the housing estate, followed by a visit to the exhibition and a slide presentation at the “Hufeisensiedlung Information Center,” the challenges, projects, experiences, successes, and failures will be discussed.

  • Tour starting point: 3:00 p.m. at U7 subway station, Blaschkoallee stop, exit to Fritz-Reuter-Allee
  • Fee: €10, reduced €8 per person
