Part of the Lecture Series Where Does the Truth Lie? On Tolerance of Ambiguity (in German)

In the lecture series Where Does the Truth Lie? On the Tolerance of Ambiguity, five scholars discuss the tolerance of ambiguity and its relevance today: How can people acknowledge and tolerate different positions?

Prof. Hans-Georg Soeffner (University of Bonn) shows that the demand for tolerance of ambiguity played a fundamental role in social cohesion as early as the European Enlightenment. However, the contextual background to this demand is now utterly changed: people live in a heterogeneous society whose structures are characterized by religious, national, ethnic, political and economic pluralism. Soeffner highlights the opportunities and limitations presented by tolerance of ambiguity.
