The Berlin Theatertreffen is one of the most renowned theater festivals in the German-speaking world. At the heart of the event are the ten "most remarkable productions", selected by an independent jury of critics from around 400 performances in the German-speaking world during the viewing period.
The festival center is traditionally the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The event is an innovative meeting place for theater makers and interested parties from all over the world, a networking and discourse platform, and an open space for the theater arts.
Starting in 2023, the four theater makers Olena Apchel, Marta Hewelt , Carolin Hochleichter and Joanna Nuckowska will take over the management, planning and design of the festival.
The Theatertreffen has been bringing remarkable productions from German-speaking countries as well as works by up-and-coming artists from around the world to Berlin every May since 1964.
What themes, aesthetics and focal points shape the theater? Together with artists, academics, journalists and the public, the festival takes a look at the status quo and the future.
In addition, there are other program pillars and formats of the festival: the Stückemarkt, which has been dedicated to the promotion of contemporary drama since 1978 and invites theater makers - in 2018 for the first time from all over the world - to apply with their new plays or already completed theater projects, functions almost like a festival within the festival.
At the International Forum, young international artists come together within the framework of the scholarship program to look at art together and to work on the future of theater. The Theatertreffen is critically accompanied by the young journalists of the TT Blog and additionally framed by the discourse program TT Kontext. Some smaller components of the Theatertreffen have also become established: As part of Open Campus, the Theatertreffen is a networking and meeting place for high school and university students.
Since 2015, photographer and director Marcus Gaab has been producing exceptional short films for the Theatertreffen as part of his One on One project. Every year, the Theatertreffen Award is presented to the invited ensembles of the 10 Selection.
