The walk begins with the eventful history of the Tegel Mill and the role that Tegel, with its harbour and industrial railway, played in the settlement of industry in the northern surroundings of Berlin. On the other hand, Tegel developed into a popular excursion and travel destination for Berliners in the mid-19th century. Steamship companies fought a competitive battle for supremacy on the lake. All this contrasted with the thunder of cannons from the nearby shooting range and the busy hammering of Egell's iron hammer.
