Two masterpieces – one gripping operatic experience: In a visually stunning new production by Pınar Karabulut, the final two parts of Giacomo Puccini's IL TRITTICO return to the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Between spiritual depth and biting satire, a musical panorama of human longing, guilt, greed, and redemption unfolds – emotional, colorful, and absolutely present.
Two Operas – Two Worlds
SUOR ANGELICA
A deeply moving, all-female work that poses questions of life, death, and hope. Puccini's music lends the tragic story of a young nun who has lost her child a poignant, almost mystical intensity. In her feminist interpretation of the production, Karabulut explores themes such as self-determination, guilt, and spiritual rebellion – a haunting chamber play set in a monastic microcosm.GIANNI SCHICCHI
A sharp counterpoint to the spiritual seriousness of Suor Angelica: With crude comedy, bitter wit, and a touch of commedia dell'arte, Puccini tells the story of a cunning con man who outwits a money-hungry family of inheritance hunters. An amusing and socially critical intrigue surrounding the inheritance unfolds at a rapid pace – including the famous aria "O mio babbino caro."
Karabulut's Production: A Riot of Color & Depth on the Revolving Stage
Director Pınar Karabulut stages the two one-act operas as garish yet multifaceted pieces of musical theater full of contrasts. Her visual style, her precise sense of timing and ensemble direction, and the use of a rotating revolving stage transform the pieces into a sensually over-the-top world theater that radically questions social role models – sometimes dark and poetic, sometimes outrageously funny.
