In the summer of 1927, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven – Dadaist poet, nude model and proto-punk – wrote a letter to the patron Peggy Guggenheim. In a spirit of prophetic euphoria and apocalyptic urgency, she describes her latest project: a studio for experimental modelling, intended to mark her artistic comeback and thus offer a way out of her existential misery. Peggy Guggenheim shows interest, but does not pay. Shortly afterwards, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven takes her own life.

Almost a century later, Spirit Plastic revisits this forgotten episode in the history of performance art and reimagines Baroness Elsa’s Paris studio as a resonating space for the dilemmas of artistic practice today.
Drawing on autofictional texts from her later work, the piece develops choreographic worlds and explores models of art and life in the face of an economically, politically and spiritually precarious present.
