Cinematheque – Hall
Films by Florinda Frisardi, Faraz Fesharaki/Moritz Friese and Ewelina Rosińska, made between 2017 and 2025 at various stages of their studies, are preceded by an early film by Raoul Peck, whose critique centres on language.
The artistic spectrum of these films is broad – a breadth that opens up as long as films are made with the courage to question formal or ideological expectations.
Leugt
BRD 1983, directed by Raoul Peck, DCP, 13 mins, German with English subtitles
‘Vowels, consonants, pauses, punctuation merely form a sequence of sounds and non-sounds, from which we, the masses, thanks to centuries of systematic civic education, are still able to distil intonations and accents, so that, despite ‘not understanding what he’s just said or, indeed, what he’s been on about the whole time’, we can clap at the right moments.” (Raoul Peck, from a project synopsis for ‘Leugt’, May 1983)
Reigen
Germany 2025, Director: Florinda Frisardi, DCP, 6 mins, German with English subtitles
In a single, continuous shot, a brilliant drama of jealousy unfolds in an underground car park. Familiar tropes of popular narrative cinema are thrown into a bewildering disarray by a narrative loop. A moving-image trompe l’oeil that leaves a lasting impression.
It’s a criminal waste to subject this film to post-production
Germany/Iran 2017, directed by Faraz Fesharaki and Moritz Friese, DCP, 20 mins, Farsi and German with original subtitles
On a film set: director Faraz wants to shoot a scene in which he makes a video call to his parents. No sooner has the conversation begun than his father, in particular, starts to question the scripted dialogue. The everyday setting of the Zoom call sabotages the ambitions of the feature film production apparatus.
Ashes by name is man
Germany 2023, directed by Ewelina Rosińska, shot on 16mm, DCP, 20 mins, no dialogue
Ewelina Rosińska shot her graduation film with a 16mm camera in the cultural landscapes around Kraków and Lviv, portraying not only her grandparents’ everyday lives but also a rural way of life shaped by Catholicism. ‘In the writings of my favourite painter, I read that the Polish landscape seems to him to constantly direct our gaze towards the ground, prompting us to look not beyond the horizon but beneath our feet, at the bones buried beneath every step.’ (Ewelina Rosińska)
Guests: Florinda Frisardi, Sebastian Ladwig, Faraz Fesharaki (tbc), Moritz Friese, Ewelina Rosińska
Curated by Karina Griffith and Tobias Hering
