biegungen im ausland
A theme evening as part of the Biegen im Ausland festival, which is entirely dedicated to a highly versatile instrument in three solo sets: the drums.
Sofia Borges expands the sound possibilities of her instrument with everyday objects that can be found in any hardware store or household goods store: metal angles, kitchen stuff, toys. The range of sounds that can be heard in her solo sets is as flexible as her instrument.
With her free, open playing, she treats tempo as a variable, as one category among many, with no claim to dominance. Electronic sounds complement Borges' lively percussion.
Ilia Gorovitz has had a decisive influence on Berlin's artistic underground in just a few years. As an organizer with a sure taste, Gorovitz presents exciting international acts from the areas of noise and improv. Every program he is responsible for is a manifesto of uncompromisingness.
As a musician, Gorovitz is involved in various projects, including playing in the minimal noise rock duo Stumpf and the bands PΞB and my blood is confusing. The drummer lives out his preference for complex rhythms and various degrees of distortion in his solo sets.
Sometimes delicate, sometimes powerful, but always absolutely focused, Pedro Melo Alves plays. In his virtuoso live concerts he gives the sounds space; Alves effortlessly switches from contemplative soundscapes to complex, dense figures on the drums.
At the highest technical level, the Portuguese musician and composer gets amazing things out of skins, frames, cymbals and objects. His sets are like voyages of discovery through the tonal diversity of his instrument.
