Johann Crüger's importance lies not only in his melodic creations, but also in his role as an editor of hymnals. With a great sense for poetic qualities, he also "discovered" hymn writer Paul Gerhardt, setting and publishing his texts as well as those of other contemporary poets. Many of these songs are still sung today, so that the 400th anniversary of his inauguration as cantor will be celebrated in a setting that was the focus of his 40-year ministry: a service in St. Nikolai.
