Maximilian Steinbeis, editor-in-chief of Vefrassungsblog, and writer Özge Inan will discuss with Ronen Steinke and Nora Markard. How stable is this democracy against a right-wing takeover?

Politics is done right. Laws and judgments are used to reinforce social hierarchies and control people. But law is also a means of liberation from domination, of emancipation for minorities who can thereby assert themselves against a majority. It is a tool that can also be used to fight for improvements – if you know how.

Using examples from twelve central areas of law, law professor Nora Markard and lawyer and journalist Ronen Steinke show how changes can be fought for together using legal means - from climate protection to gender relations to human rights. Written in an easy-to-understand and clear manner, they invite everyone who is interested in politics to get involved. Because law concerns everyone.

Ronen Steinke, born in 1983, is a doctor of law, journalist and best-selling author. He studied law at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg and Tokyo and then worked in law firms, a youth prison and at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Since 2017 he has been working as a legal policy correspondent for the Berlin-based Süddeutsche Zeitung, primarily covering legal policy and extremism. He became known for his biography of Fritz Bauer, the former Hessian public prosecutor, which was made into a film in 2015.

Nora Markard, born in 1978, is a German lawyer who works in the fields of international law, constitutional law and legal gender studies. She is a professor at the University of Münster where she holds a chair for international public law and international human rights protection. She studied law at the Free University of Berlin, Master of Arts at King's College London, and doctorate at the HU Berlin. Nora Markard is co-founder and member of the board of the organization “Society for Freedom Rights”, which has already won several lawsuits before the Federal Constitutional Court.
