Marzahn-Hellersdorf: History on the street

Street names bear witness to history. The joint exhibition project “Rename?!” by the Working Group of Berlin’s Regional Museums sheds light on the reasons behind the naming and renaming of streets in Berlin.

Building on developments across the entire city, the regional section of the exhibition focuses on the specific characteristics of Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

The renaming that took place after the incorporation of villages into Greater Berlin in 1920 plays a role, as do the ideologically charged street names from the Nazi era and the GDR. Additionally, the construction of large housing estates in the 1970s and 1980s led to numerous new names. Finally, current debates are also addressed.

The exhibition invites visitors to discover how streets get their names and what stories, ideas, and values lie behind them.
