Documentary, Germany 1995

Paula Levi (1897–2000), the daughter of a rabbi, was a celebrated artist, performing as the opera singer Paula Lindberg in Berlin and as a Bach interpreter in Leipzig. In 1930, she married the surgeon Albert Salomon and became the stepmother of his daughter Charlotte (the protagonist of our evening’s programme, ‘Charlotte’s Colours’, on 20 November).

After 1933, Paula was only permitted to perform for the Jewish Cultural Association and fled with her husband to Amsterdam. Both were arrested, but managed to escape from Westerbork camp and survived in a hiding place in South Holland. They only learnt of their daughter’s death and her work *Life? Or Theatre?* after the war. The film portrays Paula five years before her death at the age of 102.
