Founded in 1964 on the occasion of the Germany meeting of the Free German Youth, the GDR youth radio DT64 developed initially as a "youth studio" and from 1986 as an independent station to become the central voice of subculturally interested youth in the GDR.
The station survived the GDR and the shutdown planned for 1991, which was delayed by an extremely committed movement of its listeners - a fight that initially brought partial success but ultimately failed.
The drama of this story is retold in "DT64 - The book on youth radio 1964-1993", which was published by former DT64 journalists Jörg Wagner and Andreas Ulrich. The book, which illuminates key chapters of the station's history from the perspective of insiders and observers, quickly sold out.
To mark DT64's 60th anniversary, it is now finally being published in an expanded new edition under the title "Power from the Eastside!". This new edition supplements the original work with additional illustrations, materials and updated content.
