From September 14 through October 14, 2022, the Misk Art Institute from Riyadh and the Berlin Art Institute will present works and projects by nine up-and-coming Saudi artists including one writer at the Galerie der Neuen Schule für Fotografie during Berlin Art Week. For the first time, the show features the results of the cooperation between the artist promotion programs of the two institutes in Berlin and Riyadh that was launched in 2021.

The exhibition entitled Next Wave gathers works and projects by a new generation of Saudi artists dealing with issues such as the environment, technology critique, determinism, the sense of belonging, coming to terms with memories, and the encounter with urban spaces.

The presented works mark the culmination point of the intensive development and engagement of the stipend recipients of the years 2021 and 2022. They bring together the following practice-oriented promotion programs: Misk Art Institute’s Masaha Residency Program and the BAI Residency Program run by the Berlin Art Institute – all of which emphasize the importance of critical practice and research.

The show retraces the encounter of the stipend recipients in the exhibition space. The title of the exhibition, Next Wave, alludes to avant-garde and uncharted territory. The works and projects by the artists are at the center of the exhibition, with research and documentation playing a crucial role.

On September 15, a panel will be held in the frame of the exhibition (6-8pm), in which the artists discuss their different experiences with the stipend program of the Misk Art Institute and the role of art as a bridge between cultures. The Berlin Art Institute will be introduced as a partner of the Misk Art Institute.

On September 16, the Misk Art Institute invites from 6-8 pm visitors to discuss with the exhibiting artists, accompanied by Oud music and Saudi coffee.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Misk Art Institute and the Berlin Art Institute
