Input and discussion with Pardis Eskandaripour

The installation Muslim Invisibility is a temporary intervention in the permanent exhibition of the Museum of European Cultures, which will be on display until April. What could happen next? How can things that are part of Muslim religious practices be presented in a museum of European everyday history?

In her input, Pardis Eskandaripour will report on her research, in which she deals with the presentation of religious-Islamic objects, particularly in ethnological museums.

  • How are they exhibited?
  • What categories are used to classify and describe them?

Against this background, we will look at the installation together and in discussion and consider how and where objects of Muslim everyday culture can find their place in the MEK in the future.

Pardis Eskandaripour is writing her doctorate on exhibition contexts and concepts of Islamic objects in museums. Her research interests include the theory of space and place, Islamica, Manichaeism, holy places and the role of possession cults in Iran. From 2003 to 2008 she completed a bachelor's degree in sociology at the Allameh Tabatabai University of Tehran/Iran, and from 2012 to 2016 she studied ethnology (bachelor's and master's) at the University of Leipzig. The topics of her final theses already had a connection to the topics of religion in museums, museum exhibitions on Islam, storytelling in museums and the material culture of religion.
