NO LIMITS Disability & Performing Arts Festival Berlin

Servus, Grüezi and Hallo! In 1981 the Musikantenstadl went on air on ORF. The first episode from the tranquil Upper Austrian town of Enns seemed a bit bumpy, but people were clapping on the beer benches like in episode 53.

The principle is clear: Karl Moik rhymes the presentations, the Alpine countries form the backdrop and are the origin of most of the acts. There is yodeling, Schuhplattler dancing and swaying. Some very young singer or trumpet player celebrates his first appearance. Everything is so good that the beams of the modular barn bend with applause.

So far, so well known. What has perhaps been overlooked: the Musikantenstadl was a global project. Karl Moik was with the barn in Moscow, Beijing, Melbourne, Cape Town and even the Caribbean - always with the same stage set.

All over the world, the Schuhplattler, breasts laced in traditional costumes, yodeled declarations of love for the Alps and trumpeting young people were presented as typically German and made common cause with the cultural clichés of the host country.

Unthinkable today. The show no longer exists - Karl Moik is dead. History. But this story is only around 20 years old.

Rainald Grebe, director, cabaret artist, author and songwriter, immerses himself together with the RZt ensemble in the first broadcast of Karl Moik's Musikantenstadl from 1981 and lets himself drift through the world of folk music and good taste.

An evening with lots of music and dancing, yodeling and clapping beer benches.
