A guide to the ‘Mammals’ sub-collection
Researchers use the collection of mammalian skulls, as well as those of deer and antlered animals, to identify species, trace evolution and study changes in biodiversity. Both galleries bring this scientific work to life.

At the same time, the tour reveals that many of the objects found their way to Berlin during the German colonial era. The new exhibition in both galleries was developed in collaboration with co-curators from several African countries. This expands the traditional scientific perspective on the objects to include stories about people, places and historical contexts, as well as questions of provenance, the colonial contexts in which the objects were acquired, and accountability.
- The guided tour also addresses violence against people and animals, which is why a minimum age of 12 is recommended.
