Yul • Redfern / MamaNoSing
Performative dance and music theater about motherhood, mental load and gaming. Four women, mental load and a virtual superheroine.
After their extremely successful Chekhov rewrite Sistas! at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and the audience-acclaimed Nestroy rewrite Cypressenburg at the Vienna Burgtheater, director Isabelle Redfern and choreographer Ute Pliestermann combine postpartum depression and gaming in a wild ride into empowerment.
While one mother flees to the bathroom when her children stress her out, the other turns to stone when she is overwhelmed by her fear of infant death. They all end up with the headstrong psychologist Mrs. Wu, who sends them not to the therapeutic couch but into the world of online games. There they meet superheroine Mama Mega, who has everything under control by breaking taboos and parenting rules.
Fear, exhaustion, loneliness and aggression are catapulted into the virtual world and from there back into reality in a furious and dance-like manner. Mental load is not the final destination, but a construct that is pulverized on stage. Musically, pianist MING holds the reins and plays everything that women have composed so far, from baroque and romantic to folk and pop. Game over. Dance now. The liberation begins.
