The geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as Madame Butterfly, is madly in love with Lieutenant Pinkerton. What she doesn’t know, however, is that he has no intention of entering into a lasting union through a traditional Japanese wedding.

She bears him a child and waits for years for the lieutenant’s return. Finally, Pinkerton returns, but he has brought his American wife with him. When the two try to take the child away from Madame Butterfly, the geisha stabs herself.
