A Mourning Ritual by Cristina Del Barco
Cristina Del Barco's photographic series LUTO is a striking visual exploration of the theme of coping with grief. On the tenth anniversary of her father's death, the artist creates a ritual homage in the form of 20 intense black-and-white portraits that convey the emotional process of loss, memory, and inner transformation.
The central design element is the dominant color black – a symbol of pain and the depth of grief. Materials such as textiles, metal, and plastic serve as powerful visual metaphors: fabrics represent familial security, metal represents permanence, and plastic represents the fragility of human relationships.
Del Barco's sensitive imagery, characterized by light, shadow, and structure, opens the viewer up to an introspective journey through the emotional labyrinth of farewell.
Her art addresses themes such as grief work, familial connection, resilience and the transience of life in an impressive way – and positions LUTO as an important photographic work in the context of contemporary mourning art and artistic remembrance culture.
