Jakob Augstein has been publisher and managing director of the weekly newspaper "der Freitag" since 2008. Born in Hamburg in 1967, he studied politics at the Free University of Berlin and at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris from 1989 to 1993. He worked as a reporter for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Berlin and eastern Germany for ten years. From 2011 to 2018 he wrote the column "Im Zweifel links" on "SPIEGEL ONLINE". From 2011 to 2020, he had a weekly exchange of blows with Nikolaus Blome, the former deputy editor-in-chief of the Bild newspaper, on the Phoenix program "Augstein and Blome" on the political topic of the week. His novel "The Color of Fire" was published in March 2024.


Nikolaus Blome (born 1963) is a German journalist, commentator and author. Since September 2020, he has been head of the Politics and Society department in the central editorial office of the RTL Deutschland media group and an online columnist for the news magazine Der Spiegel.
