Dismantled - restored - made chic! The campanile of the Church of Peace in Sanssouci Park shines in new splendor after a successful restoration.

Exactly 100 years after the foundation stone of Sanssouci was laid, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the Church of Peace built. During construction, modern materials such as zinc sheet, zinc or cast iron, which were already industrially manufactured at the time, were used.

However, due to inadequate drainage, lack of maintenance and temporary security, the support system and the masonry were ultimately dilapidated and the stability of the tower was at risk.

In 2022, the urgently needed repair of the bell tower could begin. The restoration work was very extensive - among other things, a stainless steel corset was installed in the 42-meter-high tower to stabilize it. In addition, the entire brick surfaces have been reworked and a drainage system has been installed. The bell cages have also been repaired and the four historic bronze bells have been restored.

This successful completion of the work will be used as an opportunity to climb the tower with interested parties - via an online tour. The tower climb will be broadcast via an Instagram live stream on November 14, 2024 at 3 p.m. on the @SPSGmuseum online INSTAGRAM account.

Project restorer Dr. Ute Joksch and area construction manager Frank Karalus will explain all sorts of exciting things about the restoration work and show what has changed - including fascinating views from the tower.

Questions from participants are expressly welcome!
