city turning tour with city guide Swantje Glock

With the IBA-Altbau from 1984, the "clear-cut renovation" practiced in Berlin until then was gradually transformed into a careful urban renewal. In addition to socially acceptable preservation and needs-based modernization of the old buildings, the needs of residents and tradespeople were included in the planning process for the first time. Urban renewal was fundamentally understood as an open process, the concept of which should also be effective in the future beyond the immediate results.

To this end, representatives of those affected were strengthened and citizen protests were transformed into a permanent and constructive form of citizen participation. The tour leads to selected examples of the IBA old building in Kreuzberg.
