Correspondence between Caroline von Humboldt and Frederike Brun

Between 1810 and 1829, Caroline and Friederike wrote over a hundred letters to each other. These letters document not only their close friendship, which lasted for almost two decades, but also the political, social and artistic life of an era in transition – from the Napoleonic occupation to the period after the Congress of Vienna.

Preserved in the Royal Library and the National Archives in Copenhagen, as well as in Tegel Palace, these letters are considered a unique source for the cultural history of the 19th century. They were edited and annotated by Dr Kerstin Gräfin von Schwerin, who will introduce the background to this extraordinary correspondence on this evening.

Two speakers will read selected passages from the letters of Caroline von Humboldt and her friend, the German-Danish writer Friederike Brun, whose homes in Berlin, Copenhagen, Rome and Vienna were frequented by the creative minds and intellectuals of Europe.
