Ancient mythology continues to fascinate today: numerous books are currently being published in which women are given their own voice as mythical protagonists. This results in a change of perspective on stories that were created in a patriarchal society and passed down through male perspectives.
Following this discussion about ancient gender roles, the Antiquities Collection takes a new look at the goddesses and heroines in its holdings. The special exhibition presents statues, vases and other visual evidence that show mythical women both as role models in accordance with social norms and as counter-images that radically exceed these norms. This creates a multi-layered picture.
The exhibition enables a dialogue between exemplary modern perspectives as well as various aspects of reception history and the ancient exhibition objects.
