Symphony Concert by Wayne Marshall

In *The Elements*, Errollyn Wallen combines the forces of nature with human soundscapes: the sound of the sea, wind, and city noise meet spiritual rituals, dances, and social ceremonies. Here, humans are portrayed not as subordinates, but as co-creators of nature. By the time of the premiere in 2025, Wallen had long been associated with the BBC Proms—she had made her debut there in 1998 as the first Black woman to do so.

Kurt Weill’s Broadway musical *Lady in the Dark* tells the story of Liza, a fashion executive who, torn between her career, love, and self-doubt, descends into a state of exhaustion. Weill’s blend of jazz and modern classical music made the work one of his greatest successes in America in 1941.

George Gershwin’s *Rhapsody in Blue* also caused a sensation in 1924 as an “Experiment in Modern Music.” Among the audience at the premiere were artists such as Rachmaninoff, Stokowski, and Kreisler. Today, with its unique blend of jazz and classical music, the work ranks among Gershwin’s most popular compositions.
