Symphony Concert by Wayne Marshall
Kurt Weill’s Broadway musical *Lady in the Dark* tells the story of Liza, a fashion executive who, torn between her career, love, and self-doubt, descends into a state of exhaustion. Weill’s blend of jazz and modern classical music made the work one of his greatest successes in America in 1941.
George Gershwin’s *Rhapsody in Blue* also caused a sensation in 1924 as an “Experiment in Modern Music.” Among the audience at the premiere were artists such as Rachmaninoff, Stokowski, and Kreisler. Today, with its unique blend of jazz and classical music, the work ranks among Gershwin’s most popular compositions.
