Poems, texts and songs by Wilhelm Busch
Despite his bachelor lifestyle, Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908) was no sad sack. He enjoyed drinking heavily, eating well and writing down and drawing the quirks of his fellow citizens. (Some of his grotesque drawings of drunkenness may even be based on W.B.'s own experiences.)

Picture stories such as ‘Max and Moritz’ and ‘The Pious Helene’ made Busch wealthy; his dream of becoming a recognised painter remained unfulfilled.
To this day, we are amused by his accurate caricatures and the ingenuity of his concise verses. But who knows his prose texts or ‘Undank-baren’ (The Ungrateful)?
