First part of Bernhard Seeger's TV drama, GDR 1966

During Soviet captivity, a friendship develops between the wheelwright Hannes Trostberg and the farmer's son Edwin Spahn. Both return to their home village in 1945. The television drama focuses on the social upheaval, new political beginning and development of the new democratic order. Trostberg's criticism is harsh, but his measures are often even harsher - not everyone likes that.

Peter Hagen views this national issue in a humanistic context and contrasts calculated political manoeuvres with solidarity. In the end, social circumstances are what makes people the way there are.
