Claudia von Alemann, born on March 23, 1943, first studied sociology and art history in Berlin. In 1964 she moved to the Ulm Academy of Design, where she studied at the Institute for Film Design until 1968. After making a few short experimental films, she began working as a freelancer for various television stations while still a student.

In 1968 she made the television documentary "Das ist nur der Anfang - der Kampf geht weiter" (1969). In 1974 von Alemann moved to Paris, where she worked as a freelance director, lecturer, translator and journalist until 1980. In many documentaries and feature films of this period, von Alemann dealt with political issues, especially women's emancipation.
