Mary Ellen Mark learned about the closed women's security unit at Oregon State Hospital, Ward 81, in early 1975 while photographing the production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. She asked to meet some of the women on the ward and after a brief encounter she realized that their stories needed to be told. A year later she photographed and interviewed the women on Ward 81, together with her friend, the writer and social scientist Dr. Karen Folger Jacobs.
C/O Berlin presents "Ward 81 Voices," a compelling new documentary about Mark and Folger Jacob's experiences during their 36-day stay at the ward. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Martin Bell, the film is based on sound recordings from 1976 and features Mark's expressive photography.
