A discussion and reading with Nicole Bröhan and Josephine Klinger

Nicole Bröhans’ historical novel *Falsche Originale* takes one of the most spectacular art scandals of the Weimar Republic as its starting point.

In 1927, the flamboyant dancer and art dealer Otto Wacker offered the Cassirer Art Salon several supposed Van Gogh works for an exhibition. Shortly before the exhibition was due to open, the salon’s staff, Grete Ring and Walter Feilchenfeldt, recognised the forgeries – and so began one of the most sensational art trials of the era.

But how could this fraud have succeeded in the first place? Barely 15 years after his death, Vincent van Gogh had already become an icon of modernism in Germany – largely thanks to the exhibitions organised by Paul Cassirer.

In conversation with Josephine Klinger, the discussion centres on the historical background to the art scandal and the role of the Cassirer Art Salon. Nicole Bröhan reads excerpts from her novel.
