In 17th century England, the viola da gamba was so popular that children were given music lessons on it and barbers kept them on hand for their customers to pass the waiting time. The excellent reputation of English viola da gamba players soon attracted the attention of the French court and the viola da gamba eventually rose to become the queen of instruments under the Sun King.
