The change of power in one of the highest offices in the world is looming: Pope Benedict XVI, a hardliner in the Holy See, publicly announces his resignation. And he has an inkling of who will succeed him: Jorge Mario Bergoglio. A temporary doorman and janitor in his younger years, the Argentine rises to become archbishop of Buenos Aires after training as a chemist and is named cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001. He is considered a reformer and already in 2005, when Cardinal Ratzinger is elected pope, Bergoglio is very close behind him.

By intending to resign, Benedict risks having his successor undo his efforts to preserve the tradition of the Catholic Church against all contrary public tendencies. Can he allow that to happen, or would he be forced to cling to his high office to a bitter end?

To settle this question, he summons Bergoglio to Rome. Bergoglio comes believing his request to be allowed to leave the Church would be the reason for the invitation. To his surprise, he learns that he is being asked to join the spiritual dignitary's fight for survival. And even more surprising is the development and outcome of this fascinating confrontation.

Although the events of the play are historically documented and it is about the continuation of a two thousand year old religion, the play can be understood in a validity that is world-spanning in its spirituality, beyond narrow religious rules and prescribed attitudes.
