3rd evening: Belarus. Voices, memory – the future

The Nobel Prize winner for literature Svetlana Alexievich and the political scientist and journalist Artyom Shraibman, both from Belarus and living in exile, are guests this time as part of the reading and discussion series "Dialogue in War | War in Dialogue".

In conversation with Manfred Sapper, editor-in-chief of the magazine Osteuropa, they will discuss culture and society in doubly occupied Belarus as well as literature in exile in this country.

The often expressed view that "the war is back in Europe" has turned out to be a euphemism since February 24, 2022. The war had never really disappeared from the continent since May 8, 1945. It simply took on different forms and is now raging with extreme brutality in Ukraine, which the Russian leadership wants to destroy. Intellectuals from Ukraine have fled their destroyed homeland and found refuge in European cities. They live, work, learn and teach here, just like the opposition members who left their home countries of Russia and Belarus because of repression and terror.

Authors from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus will present texts about the war and its effects beyond their countries' borders in four separate events. They will explore the causes of the conflict and discuss future strategies.

The musical accompaniment on the prepared grand piano is provided by Micha Busch.

The event will be simultaneously translated by Irina Bondas and Maria Unrau.

Entry is free of charge, a registration is not needed.
