Neo Rauch's first solo exhibition in Berlin since 2001! Admire his very personal work, compiled from the painter's personal collection, at Gutshaus Steglitz. Neo Rauch ranks internationally among the outstanding painters of the present day. His work is singular, perhaps because it draws on the artist's inner world or imagination, fed by the subconscious and unconscious, to an extraordinary degree
Neo Rauch ranks internationally among the outstanding painters of the present day. His work is singular, perhaps because it draws on the artist's inner world or imagination, fed by the subconscious and unconscious, to an extraordinary degree for contemporary art. His pictorial worlds appear ambiguous and unsettling, the figures enigmatic in their actions.
The exhibition Der Beifang shows works on paper created after 2000, many of them in the 2010s. The mostly large-format paintings come from the painter's private collection and revolve around themes close to his heart - including biographical experiences or his self-image as an artist.
The exhibition is dominated by large-format works on paper, which are thoroughly formulated in composition and color and in this are reminiscent of Rauch's canvas paintings. The role of color and the - in the artist's terminology - "color regime" to which each painting is subjected become immediately apparent here. In addition to the large formats, the exhibition also shows a selection of smaller sheets that convey a lesser-known area in Neo Rauch's artistic oeuvre: Looser in ductus and more straightforward in scenery, they are, however, hardly less enigmatic. Even if one or the other motif recurs in larger dimensions on paper or canvas, these sheets are not preliminary works. This is essentially just as true for the partly fleeting, partly meticulous drawings from the studio - the third aspect of this very private exhibition.
