A light and touching piece about a heavy subject | By Esther Becker

“Life is not a request concert,” say the adults. And that is what Anna says, who has to cope with her everyday life on her own. Her parents have fallen by the wayside for some time between too much beer and wine. Sometimes it rumbles here, sometimes a bottle bursts there, but for Anna they all remain a distant murmur. Fortunately, she has a new pet in the form of the snail Uli Sascha Chris. Well, if the tooth fairy hasn't got a hand in that.

And her best friend Hannah also defends her when she comes in late for physical education because her parents did not wake her up. How would they, though, when they sleep off their drunkenness all day. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Anna to keep secret from those around her and from Hannah what is going on at home. How good that the teacher from the neighbourhood and the pizza delivery boy help her so lovingly and discreetly.

With pointed language, the author Esther Becker approaches the difficult topic of alcoholism in the family in a delicate way. She tells with great sympathy from the point of view of the child who tries to maintain a regulated everyday structure in the midst of irrepressible chaos.
