with Anne Bitterwolf, Curatorial Advisor to the Director
In his artistic practice, Julius von Bismarck (*1983) deals with the location of man in his environment and with what is socially treated as nature. Again and again he uses deconstruction to question how we as a society evaluate nature in the form of landscape and who has the sovereignty of interpretation in this evaluation process.
For the first time, von Bismarck chose a biographical approach for his exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie and also dealt with his family history. The reciprocal relationships between the understanding of nature and the writing of history are at the center of his works.
