The Geringas Chamber Orchestra was founded in Berlin in 2016 to mark the 70th birthday of the legendary cellist and conductor David Geringas. The idea behind it was to offer young and talented musicians the opportunity to perform with the orchestra under the baton of David Geringas.

The idea was supported with great enthusiasm not least by musicians from Berlin’s orchestras, renowned chamber musicians and international prize-winners. The first CD and DVD recording took place in 2020. G

The chamber orchestra made its grand debut at the Elbphilharmonie in 2021.

David Geringas (Vilnius, Lithuania, 1946), cellist, conductor and founder of an orchestra for young artists – the Geringas Chamber Orchestra – is one of the most influential musicians of our time.

He is regarded as a true bridge between the Eastern European and Western cello traditions. A pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatoire and winner of the gold medal at the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition, he has won many prestigious prizes throughout his career.

Famous contemporary composers have dedicated several works to him, and his discography comprises more than 120 recordings.

For many years, he devoted himself to teaching. His legendary cello class included pupils such as Gustav Rivinius, Jens Peter Maintz, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Monica Leskovar, Tatiana Vassiljeva, Jing Zhao, Johannes Moser, Maximilian Hornung and Sol Gabetta. He has been teaching at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena since 2005. In 2023, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Classical Music Awards. In 2023, David Geringas published his autobiography, co-written with Jan Brachmann: “Don’t Tell Anyone” – Memoirs of a Cellist.
