Cinema Surreal

When Stefano Knuchel was a child, his family were wealthy and lived in a spacious villa in Ticino. His parents ran a motel with a nightclub; life seemed like one endless party. Stefano dreamt of becoming like his idol, the French pop star Claude François.

When a motorway rendered the motel redundant, his father provided for his family through illegal property deals. The schemes were exposed, and the family began a restless flight across the whole of Europe. For Stefano, it was like an endless holiday: no school, always in the sun, always on his own, without friends, and the bare essentials were always packed, just in case the police turned up. Eventually, his father was arrested, and his mother moved back to Ticino with the children. With iron discipline, she earned a living for the family working in a nightclub. Eventually, Stefano also made peace with his parents.

Stefano Knuchel recounts this life story with calm detachment and dry humour, using a constantly shifting array of images – half surreal, half documentary, half contemporary history. He never loses himself in self-pity; his life seems like an eternal dream that will ultimately give it meaning.
